Communicating generalizations about events

Habitual sentences (e.g. Bill smokes.) generalize an event over time, but how do you know when a habitual sentence is true? We develop a computational model and use this to guide experiments into the truth conditions of habitual language. In Expts. 1 & 2, we measure participants’ prior expectations about the frequency with which an event occurs and validate the predictions of the model for when...

Idoneal Numbers and some Generalizations

Around 1778 Euler discovered a method by which he could use certain numbers to find large primes. However, not every number is suitable for this method and hence he gave the name numeri idonei (= suitable, convenient numbers) to those numbers that are suitable. Gauss also considered idoneal numbers from a related but slightly different point of view. After Gauss, many people considered idoneal ...

What does Batman think about SpongeBob? children's understanding of the fantasy/fantasy distinction.

Young children reliably distinguish reality from fantasy; they know that their friends are real and that Batman is not. But it is an open question whether they appreciate, as adults do, that there are multiple fantasy worlds. We test this by asking children and adults about fictional characters' beliefs about other characters who exist either within the same world (e.g., Batman and Robin) or in...

Some Generalizations of Correspondence Analysis

Correspondence analysis of a bivariate table has many diierent opti-mality properties. For instance, the scores computed by correspondence analysis linearize both regressions, and maximize the correlation coee-cient. We try to generalize both properties to the multivariate situation, using the concept of maximizing any aspect of the correlation matrix, and the concept of simultaneously lineariz...

Some Generalizations of Poisson Processes

In this paper we make an attempt to review count data models developed so far as generalizations of Poisson process. We consider Winkleman’s gamma count model and the Weibull count model of Mc Shane et al. The fractional generalization of Poisson process by Mainardi et al. is also considered. A Mittag-Leffler count model is developed and studied in detail. Simulation studies are also conducted.
